Dynamic Update Clients

I wasn’t too sure if the No-IP DUC dynamic update client could be configured for my new ZoneEdit DNS service so instead I looked at the Windows clients recommended on the ZoneEdit site:

DynDNS : sitedevelopers.com's Win9X/NT/2K Dynamic Updater client, shareware.
ZEDu : zoneedit dynamic update client by GLSoft, shareware.
DirectUpdate : a Dynamic DNS updater that runs as a NT service.
DynSite : shareware client for Windows.
Dynamic IP Client : Free Source - Windows .NET threaded Service

First I’m trying Dynsite for Windows available as shareware from http://noeld.com/dldynsite.htm (copy must be registered after 30 days, cost £9.35)

DynSite for Windows is an automatic IP updater, it can update your current dynamic IP address on one or many dynamic DNS services so that anyone can contact you (in NetMeeting, CU-SeeMe, etc.) or access your FTP server or Web site on your own computer using a fully qualified domain name (e.g. myhost.dhs.org, where myhost is a name of your choice) which will never change instead of using your IP address that changes each time you reconnect. Your friends or relatives will always be able to call you, whatever your IP address is, without needing to know it. All you have to do is to sign up with one of the supported dynamic DNS services and to run DynSite for Windows.”

Dynsite was easy to install and included ZoneEdit in its supported dynamic DNS services:

However, when I looked at Details I noted the message “The host does not resolve yet”

I went to the author’s FAQ page ( http://noeld.com/dsfaq.htm ) and found this entry:

“When I select my host name in the status box and I click Details..., there is a "The host does not resolve yet" message in the status box. What's wrong?

This is only a status message and not an error. This means that your dynamic DNS was updated but it is not available yet because the information of the new IP address have first to spread on the DNS servers. If you leave the Host Status page opened you may see when your dynamic DNS will resolve. The delay between the time DynSite updates your dynamic DNS and the time it resolves to your new IP address may vary a lot from one service to another and whether your IP address is static or dynamic, this can be something between a few seconds or minutes to many hours.”

Within 36 hours came confirmation of the host resolving …
