My eventual intention is to register an appropriate domain name with the familiar .co.uk suffix and then to find a cheap and cheerful domain name service.
But
in my trawls around the web Google led me to a site which provides free domain
names and a dynamic DNS update client www.no-ip.com/
Register
your details at the site and a password will be sent to your e-mail account.
When you next log in you can opt for No-IP Free
and select a domain name from a limited list of choices (these are subdomains of
names already registered by No-IP). I settled for fentyler.no-ip.com.
And
what of DNS ? How is this name resolved to my new domain name ?
Download the small update client which periodically interrogates your IP
address and forwards it to the No-IP DNS servers. Incidentally, it follows from
all this that you could run a web server on a dial-up connection !!
No-IP
also offers various charged services. The cheapest offering is No-IP Enhanced
– for a once-for-all charge of $12.95 I could for example register the domain
name
